Chapter 17

February 6th1817

I am being courted by Nathaniel Howard, Viscount Sele. The notion is still odd. I had hoped penning it thus would make my present circumstances more real, yet it has not. A part of me feels this a dream, and I fear I will awaken when the time comes to speak to Nathaniel of Ramsgate.

I was prepared to tell him before he sought out my brother, but Lydia’s interruption prevented any further discourse. While in company with Mr. Hanson, I could not very well request more time alone with Nathaniel, and although I do not believe Mr. Hanson would gossip, it would be most improper to make such a disclosure with him present. Mrs. Annesley’s entrance after Lydia only caused my resolution to crumble.

Fitzwilliam was pleased when Nathaniel approached him requesting a courtship and wasted no time in giving his permission. Lizzy’s smile when she hugged me held a question I needed no translation to understand, and Lydia whispered that I should not retire before we talk this evening. At the moment, how I wish to avoid that discussion!
